Turkish Electronique and Bellydance
Music by Azphodel
www.azphodel.com

Acoustic and electronic musician Zane Lazos created the electro-acoustic fusion musical project Azphodel in 2007.  Following a second round of lessons in Istanbul with master tanbur and yaylı tanbur performer and educator Sadun Aksüt, Zane aims to fuse his disparate influences (classical percussion training,  bass guitar, and world music studies).  Some of the instruments utilized in the music include: Yaylı tanbur (yai-luh tan-bur); the long-necked bowed lute that is derived from the older plucked Ottoman art music instrument called tanbur or tambur. The mey; a Turkish folk oboe with a large cane reed. The def or daf (in Turkish parlance: Arbani def); a frame drum with distinctive metal bangles and evocative tone.

Honours!

I handed in my final assignment for my BA(Hons) in Film today. Huzzah!

That is all.

Computer, write my essay for me

A letter that I wrote to my computer during one of my frustrating writer’s block moments.

MASC Gig in November

This year has been my year of stepping back from booking the MASC gigs. But, I’m now booking the November and December gigs. These are the last MASC gigs of the year. And, as I’m moving overseas next year (tickets bought, British passport received), the last ones I’ll be involved with. Yikes!

So, back into booking gigs. Yay! I’ve contacted some acts. The November gig is looking good so far, with Saran Goldie, Eb & Sparrow, and Robbie Ellis booked so far. Hope you can make it. Wednesday 02 November at Happy from 9pm. $5 entry.  The gig invite on Facebook can be found here.

The Shed

I’ve handed in a 10,000 word essay and have nearly finished my Honours degree. Yay! That’s why I haven’t updated this blog in a while.

I’ve been volunteering at the NZOnScreen shed on the Wellington Waterfront. It’s been awesome. The shed is there until the end of the Rugby World Cup, so only one more week. There’s a shed in Auckland, and a caravan travelling around the South Island. There’s an interactive wall with clips from the website, and short films playing. I’ve been able to watch some of the short films. So I’m going to share with you some of my favourites. (You can see all of these and more at nzonscreen.com).

HARMLESS is now online

I’ve heard back from the last Film Festival that I entered. And I am proud to announce that Harmless is now online and is able to be viewed.

Tragedia screening

The One Minute Movie Massive screening is Friday 23 September, 1pm-2pm, in the main theatre of 77FT (Fairlie Terrace, Kelburn). This is the competition that the Victoria University Film Department ran, in its second year. It is also the competition for which I made Tragedia.

Family, friends, hangers-on are all welcome to come to the screening. I think that includes anyone. Well, anyone reading this blog who can get to the screening within 24 hours.

NZFF Day 15

My most looked forward to film of the festival. Oh yes, it’s Melancholia.

Thursday 11 August

Melancholia

Okay, I’m biased. I like Lars Von Trier’s films. I haven’t seen most of them, but I intend to. I mean, the man bought me one of my favourite films of all time, Dogville. When I watched Antichrist, I decided, whilst beautifully shot, I would not watch it again (and I love horror films, I like gorno, I love being challenged and shown disturbing stuff in the cinema). I couldn’t work out whether Antichrist was pro-misogyny, anti-misogyny, or just presenting misogyny (actually, it definitely wasn’t anti-misogyny). With that in mind, I was hoping that Melancholia would be more Dogville than Antichrist.

TRAGEDIA

On Saturday, I shot a one-minute short film that I wrote, about a Sad Clown (played by Floyd Norman). You can see photos and details on the piece on my Film page.

Once the film has been screened in competition, I’ll upload it to vimeo and will embed it for all to see.

New Business of Content Panel Discussion

I went to the New Business of Content Panel Discussion that Film Wellington organised at the Film Archive last week. It was for movers and shakers in the screen industry to get together and ‘explore the relationship between corporations and local content producers and the potential opportunities of such relationships.’
