So flicks.co.nz is having a competition, where you list your favourites films of the year.

I had to think about some of the answers.

Here’s what I put.

(…actually, here’s what I think I put. I copied and pasted what I entered, then saved the draft until I had time to write more. I came back, and the form had wiped my answers.)

BEST FILM OF THE YEAR
How To Train Your Dragon

BEST NZ FILM
This Way Of Life (I think I just wanted to be original, as most people would vote for Boy)

BEST ACTION
Kick-Ass

BEST DRAMA
Winter’s Bone

BEST COMEDY
Hot Tub Time Machine

BEST THRILLER
The Crazies

BEST HORROR
The Last Exorcism

BEST SCI-FI/FANTASY
Monsters

BEST DOCUMENTARY
Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work

BEST ANIMATED
How To Train Your Dragon

WORST FILM OF THE YEAR
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time*

MOST OVERRATED FILM
The Human Centipede

What would you have put in this list?

*okay, I haven’t actually seen this film. But I’m not a Jerry Bruckheimer fan. And I couldn’t think of anything else. And it had some of the worst reviews I had read/heard.

Some of them I had to um and ah over. Best Action? Scott Pilgrim or Kick-Ass? Actually. Hmmm…

Best documentary was a given. Although maybe I should have put ‘Teenage Paparazzo’. Or ‘Exit Through The Gift Shop’ as a joke answer.

Crap, I didn’t get Harry Brown in there (drama?). Or Four Lions (comedy). Predators could be up there for action. Hmmm…

And then I looked at Flicks.co.nz’ list of their best 20 films for the year. Crap, I didn’t include Animal Kingdom, The Secret In Their Eyes, or The Disappearance of Alice Creed.

I must admit, because I see a lot of films, and I forgot all of the films that I had seen this year, I searched on the IMDb for some hints. If you want to think of the best films of 2010, go to Top 250 on the IMDb; go to votes by decade 2010-2019. All the best 2010 films will appear (at least until 2011 films make it onto the list). You can also search by genre. I did that for horror and thriller.

Now I see that Empire UK has an online ‘list your best movies of 2010’. I’m going to have to think more about this…
